"it's alright for the price" 2010-09-15
By A Smith
I was very pleased with the product until muiltible uses. It seems to stick more often even when using oil or butter.

"Great for everyday" 2010-09-06

Our office cook ordered these. Been using them for a few month, he's happy with them.

"Beautiful!" 2010-09-01
By BlueMonkey (Omaha, NE)
Lovely set, well-made and feels very sturdy. Replaced an old T-Fal non-stick set that was still in great condition (and given to younger sister). Looked at Calphalon (another of my favorites - will keep with them for new non-stick) but for this price and T-Fal quality this one can't be beat.

Update - used the large sauce pan and 10 inch skillet last night - no sticking problems at all and cleanup was quick and easy.

"We love these pans!!!" 2010-08-28
By da perfesser (Minnesota, USA)
I decided it was time to upgrade our 35 year old Revere Wear. It was still good stuff, and the newlywed niece who now has it loves it, but I've been getting more into cooking lately and the Revere Wear was ... limiting. These pans are incredible!! The first thing we had to get used to was using them at a much lower heat setting on our electric stove. They spread the heat evenly and do the same job at "4" as the old pans did at "8". We have never had anything stick to them. They're not coated, they're not anti-stick, but they don't grab the food, even when I'm cooking up 5 quarts of chili and let it simmer (at "1", no less!!) for a few hours. Stir every half hour or so, and nothing sticks!! (The in-laws came out to visit, and Mom couldn't cook with them because they were so much better than anything she's ever used. She's always been the "turn it to high and let it boil 'til it's mush" type of cook anyway, but it was fun watching my wife trying to teach her how to use low heat!! :))

Some say that they're a beast to keep in showroom condition. Well, I don't hang them on the wall, I take them out of the cupboard and put 'em on the stove and use 'em like they were intended. If they start to look a little dull, Bar Keeper's Friend and a paper towel does wonders, or an SOS pad, either one. No elbow grease needed - they clean up to a nice shine with no fuss at all. They are far easier to wash than our old pans were. A swish of the rag and they're done.I got the full set plus a few additional pieces. I've done everything so far from soup to chili to sauces and puddings. I've fried, brased, deep fried, roasted and used them on the stove top and in the oven. I love the see-through lids!! They've opened up a whole new capability to me. I've never before been able to see what was happening without lifting the lid. They'll do an omelet over a slow heat and it slides right out of the pan like you're a pro or something. Bobby Flay I'm not, but these let me think I am if I try hard enough!!I looked at a lot of sets until I settled on these as the best bang for the buck. They are well worth the price!! I love 'em!!

"Quality cookware for induction range" 2010-08-24
By Donna Gholson Cook (Concord, CA USA)
I recently had an induction range installed and have been shopping for cookware, since my old cookware is not magnetic and would not work. The prices at our local stores were out of sight. Someone recommended T-Fal, so I found some at a local store and loved the appearance and quality feel. Then I came home and checked Amazon and found the same set for a little more than half the cost. I highly recommend the cookware and the seller for the good price and free shipping.

"horrible buy !" 2010-08-25
By R. Nair (los angeles)
I bought this cookware set a few months ago for personal use.It looked good for the price mentioned..but its a horrible buy !!the screws on the lids and handles started rusting in a months use..the pots and pans also have hot spots so have to be extra careful while cooking plus it calls for extra use of oil so the food does'nt stick to the pans...thats not all, the handles become very hot and makes a bursting kind of noise..scary !!will never ever buy anyting from this brand name and will not recommend it to anyone.

"Thin cookware, plastic handles" 2010-03-22
By Whitney Ehresman (Michigan)
The cookware is stainless steel, which is a nice feature, however the metal used in the pans is very thin. In addition, the handles on the pots and pans are a cheaper plastic and the color looks more indigo than blue. Overall, not a bad set though, and very affordable (therefore worth four stars rating).

"Fake plastic handles" 2010-02-24
By R. Jenner (Wilmington)
I got this item today and as for the appearance looks fake and the description fails to mention that the (wooden handles are plastic)so buyer beware

 "Great Price, Good Cookware" 2010-02-18
By Jose D. Mata (SLC,UT)
First of all, you can't really beat the price on this set of stainless steel cookware. They look pretty, and distribute heat evenly. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because once you burn something on these...... it seems there is no way to get it off. I burnt rice in one pan and tried everything to remove it (Bar keepers friend, oven cleaner, letting it soak over night.... etc)If you have any other suggestions that would be great. But otherwise it is a great product for the price.

"Great value, quality" 2010-02-05
By Strgte54
I purchased this set couple of months ago and waited until I had used the set before reviewing the product. I am very happy with the quality of the cookware. I have followed the instructions regarding no use of incredibly high heat - I have other pans for when high heat is required. I also make it a point not to put the pots in the dishwasher (covers yes, but not pots); they are very easy to clean. I can soak them while cleaning up the rest of the dishes from the meal and then using a regular sponge, dishcloth or non-scratch pad, they come out looking just as new as the day I got them. I would recommend this product and I would purchase it again.

Calphalon Contemporary Stainless 13-Inch Flat-Bottom Wok

Product By Calphalon(17 customers reviews)
Lowest Price : $69.99

Product Description

Master meals in minutes! We've adapted the traditional round-bottom wok for easy use on Western ranges, adding a long handle for easy lifting, tossing, and turning, and a flat bottom for stability. The stainless-steel handles also stay comfortably cool for stovetop cooking.

Amazon.com ReviewContemporary Stainless is for home chefs who place as much importance on cookware style as they do on performance. The sleek, modern vessels in this line have curvaceous and smooth flared tulip shapes that create a stunning presence while heating on a stovetop or hanging from a pot rack. The brushed steel exteriors are a beautiful complement to professional stainless-steel appliances and are less likely to show baked-on grease or wear than a polished finish can. Gracefully curved stainless-steel handles are comfortable to clutch and are forked in a half-moon shape at the riveted base to prevent heat from transferring down the shaft.
Heating in this pan is sure to satisfy the performance requirements of discerning cooks. The 13-inch round wok boasts triple-layer construction with stainless-steel exteriors bonded over a full aluminum core that extends up the sides as well as through the bottom. Aluminum is an excellent heat conductor, providing consistent cooking over high heat for crisp stir-fried snow peas, Chinese-restaurant-quality fried rice, or seared pot stickers. A flat bottom on this wok keeps it steadily balanced over a flame and allows better movement and tossing over a burner. The stainless-steel surfaces are safe in the oven and can withstand broiler temperatures as well as the use of metal utensils. All Contemporary Stainless is dishwasher-safe for quick cleanup and is covered by a lifetime warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde

Calphalon Contemporary Stainless makes it easy to keep an eye on what you're cooking. Sparkling glass covers let you monitor a whole stovetop full of pans at a glance. The cookware also features long, sculpted handles that are as comfortable as they are beautiful. Not only do they feel great in your hand, they're designed to stay cool on the stovetop.
Easy Cleanup
Calphalon Contemporary Stainless is 100 percent dishwasher-safe for effortless cleanup. (That's a feature you'll appreciate at the end of a long evening of entertaining.) You can also hand wash your pans using a dishcloth and hot sudsy water. For occasional polishing, we recommend Bar Keeper's Friend.

"Nice, but no lid" 2010-09-29
By Smart Shopper (USA)
After my carbon steel wok rusted, I went for years without a wok, waiting to find something that would better suit my needs. I knew I didn't want anything that's prone to rust or that has a nonstick surface or that's electric. I also needed to make sure it would withstand the heat of a broiler (not that I would put a wok in the oven; I just prefer that cookware be broiler safe), heat evenly and be dishwasher safe (I never put my cookware in the dishwasher, but still prefer that cookware be dishwasher safe), and that it would work on a regular (not professional) gas or electric cooktop. I'm already used to cooking with clad or "triply" stainless steel cookware and I have a strong preference for the brushed stainless steel finish, so I decided to give this a try. I am not disappointed!

Pros: The Calphalon Contemporary stainless steel 13-inch flat-bottom wok is sturdy but not too heavy, the handle is comfortable, it has a helper handle (always a plus), and it's large enough for the family meals I prepare. It also heats evenly and is easy to clean. (See comments above regarding my cookware preferences.) For those who complain about food sticking to stainless steel, please be aware that this pan is not a nonstick pan, and is not advertised as such. You will need to use more oil. Also, you cannot use cooking spray on any of Calphalon's cookware, so you might not want to buy it if you can't do without PAM. If you follow the Use and Care instructions that come with the cookware, you'll be fine.

Cons: The only downside is that it doesn't come with a lid. I waited for the price to drop so I could get the wok and also buy a lid.

Regarding the lid size: Someone posted that a 12-inch Calphalon glass lid will fit, but I'm not so sure. After all, it's a 13-inch wok! I followed my instincts and ordered the Calphalon One Nonstick 13 Inch Glass Lid (sold separately), which has a stainless steel rim. It fits perfectly, so I'm glad I didn't order the smaller size.

FYI: Before purchasing this wok, I called Calphalon to ask what the difference is between the Contemporary stainless and the Tri-Ply stainless. The representative told me that they are constructed exactly the same; the only difference is the finish. The Contemporary stainless has a brushed finish, while the Tri-Ply stainless has a shiny finish. Both come with a lifetime warranty.

The wok is very nice. Since it is stainless steel I can put it in the dishwasher.

"Good size, good wok (from someone who doesn't know much about them)" 2010-06-19
By J. Lytle (Bellingham WA, USA)
I don't know a lot about woks, but mainly we just wanted something that wouldn't spill when we made week-long batches of pad thai or fried rice. This is a good size and solid construction. It's not non-stick, so don't expect it to be.It's a little hard to clean, which is the only downside, but we didn't want non-stick, so we knew what we were getting into. For amateur cooks like us, it's a good product!

"Perfect wok and you can order the lid from Caphalon" 2010-02-04
By R. Grossman (Atlantic City, NJ)
I don't have much to add about the wok. It's great but takes a little time to get used to. You don't need the flame as high as on an inexpensive wok as it conducts heat really well. But I was too conservative at first, cooking too low.

One comment was the lack of a lid. E-mail or call Caphalon and get a lid to fit that matches the set. No part number on the lid I just got, but a label on the box says JR1613001. That's the glass lid with a stainless steel ring and handle. Fits perfectly and makes it perfect as far as I'm concerned.

"Great Wok" 2009-06-09
By H. Shen
I have been looking for a good wok for a long time. Good means these things to me:

* Stainless steel construction

* High sides - Chinese cooking could splatter quite a bit and most woks on the market have shallow walls

* Balanced weight - not feather light or deadly heavy

* Stay cool handle
* Things should not stick too much even though I don't want non-stick surface

This wok has excelled in every one of my requirements. The handle design is great, since the two parts that are attached to the wok are far apart, heat dissipates before they travel down the handle. The only thing is now - I might be moving into a place with induction cooktop and I am not sure if this is made of the kind of stainless steel that can be used with that. If anyone knows, please drop a line!

"It's not SUPPOSED to have a lid." 2010-07-02
By Reader
Great pan for a good price. If you follow the instructions to preheat the pan, things don't stick. I've used this pan several times a week since I bought it some months ago, and the only time I had anything stick was when I didn't let the pan get warm first.Other things I like about the pan are that it is easy to clean, the handle stays nice and cool, and it has a nice balance/weight to it.The negative reviews based on the absence of a lid are misleading. There is no claim made in the description that the omelet pan comes with a lid. The skillet comes with a lid, yes, but not the omelet pan. (Most decent omelet pans don't come with lids.)

"Love this pan" 2008-12-27
By Martha (Texas)
I absolutely love this skillet. It's a good size for small dishes, and it's very good quality. I won't ever use it for a dinner I suspect, but for a couple eggs, or small amounts, it's awesome. Still looks nice too.

"omelet pan" 2008-08-13
By S. J Parker (Edmond, Ok)
This pan is nothing like I expected. Omelets should easily slide out of the pan if cooked correctly. Every omelet, whether using Pam, oil or butter stuck to the pan. Even plain eggs stuck. Very disappointed with the pan.

"Love this pan" 2008-01-11
By DeezNotes (Baltimore, MD)
I don't know what the other reviews are about, but this pan isn't advertised with a lid. Most 8-12 inch pans don't come with lids. However, if you buy the VERY inexpensive Calphalon Contemporary Stainless 2 quart chef's pan from Amazon (which is an amazing deal) that lid fits this pan perfectly. I actually have 2 other lids from other Calphalon One pots/chef's pans that fit this little guy.The weight is nice. Perfect for small portions. Cooks evenly and clean up is very easy. I love this thing and I am using it just as much as my 10 inch pan which gets used very frequently.

"Great Western wok, differs dramatically from traditional Chinese wok" 2010-09-10
By ML
For a flat bottomed, Western style wok that will work on flat ranges / stove tops, this is an excellent wok.Recommended if you can afford the it!

For it:

- Excellent heat distribution / conductivity / diffusion thanks to aluminum core. This wok heats quickly throughout the flat bottom and heats gently up the sides.

- Grips food well enough when pushing food up the sides to lower temperatures.

- Low heat retention compared to thick cast iron.

- Excellent All-Clad build quality. This wok is sturdy!

- Cleans up easily with hot water, soap, and light scrubbing.

- 18/0 magnetic stainless steel bottom works great on induction range.

- No non-stick coating. You can get this wok very hot for proper stir frying!

- Wide. Ample space for a large stir fry. This is both a pro and a con since it will consume a lot of space on your range.

Against it:

- Heavy (about 5 pounds or 2.3 kg). Weak arms may not be able to lift this easily. If you're a chef and/or accustomed to a cast iron wok, you'll have no issue lifting and flipping food.

- Awkward stick handle. The long stick handle protrudes almost straight out of the wok, is rather thin, and has a ridge. If you normally use a shorter, wide, cylindrical stick handle, or the dual loop handles, you may not like this wok's handle. It's it's a negligible design flaw though.

- If you're looking for the feel and handling of a thin, relatively light, carbon steel Chinese wok, this is not it!

- Shallow. This is shallower by about 5mm or more than an average Western flat bottom wok.

- Higher heat retention than carbon steel.

- High price relative to carbon steel wok.

Conclusion:

This is an excellent Western wok and is a must have if price is not a concern. If you're looking to avoid caring for carbon steel or cast iron (seasoning, rust, breakage), need to use soap to clean up (hygiene requirements, restaurant work), or just prefer leeching nickel from the stainless steel rather than the extra iron from cast iron, this All-Clad wok is a great choice. If you have no such concerns and are equipped with a gas range and wok ring, grab a more authentic round bottomed carbon steel wok instead, but be sure it's multi ply.

"Really Great "Wok"" 2008-10-27
By B. Russo
I order this for my husband's birthday. He is quite a chef and likes to make Asian stir fry, but his old wok was in need of replacement. Most of our cookware is All-Clad so I ordered this for him and he loved it. I expected great quality from All-Clad and it delivered. Not only does he love the way it cooks but it also cleans beautifully (I know, I do the dishes!). I highly recommend this item.

"Excellent for Large Portions" 2006-05-27
By Another Constant Reader (Washington DC)
I did not find a problem with the balance, as previously mentioned by another reviewer. The only thing a potential buyer needs to be aware of is, that if they are planning on tossing their food, they had better be strong because this unit is heavy! Other than that, it proves to be very useful for large portions. It heats quickly, heats evenly, holds the heat and leaves plenty of room to stir. Yes, it does heat evenly and allows the heat to drift up the sides. The purpose of a stirfry pan is to allow heat to move the sides of the pan to allow food touching the sides of the pan to cook as well. Now keep in mind, there isnt a perfect stirfry pan out on the market if you are cooking on a traditional gas top, flat top or coil range. True frying ala Asian style is done on an open flame!

"Not practical" 2005-11-03
By Just Another Amazon Shopper (Los Gatos, CA United States)
This pan is heavy and badly balanced, and the handle is extremely uncomfortable. With a pan this heavy you need a good handle; this one is narrow (ruins the balance) and has sharp edges that are unpleasant to grasp. The pan is far too heavy to let the cook manipulate and flip and toss food the way one should for a stir fry or saute. I also find the surface very hard to clean -- the slightest fond sticks more to the pan than the food. Mine has been soaking in my sink for 48 hours now after cooking a very basic stir fry and I still don't think I'm going to be able to get it looking clean again. This is my first piece of All-Clad and it's very disappointing.
